Teaching Artist
You're a performer with a real gift for teaching, and you light up a room of young people. We're looking for a Teaching Artist to bring acting, singing, and dancing alive in our rehearsal room, working alongside our Rehearsal Lead.
Phoenix Youth Theatre is a youth performing arts organization. We build our shows around a clear artistic vision and a small, intentional team, so that when you step into the room your energy goes where it matters most, which is the kids in front of you.
This is a teaching role centered on delivery, with the heavy lifting already done for you. You run each rehearsal on a clear three-part structure - Warm-up, Scene Work, and Enrichment - all held on a StageHand page built for the room. You're not inventing the show. You're bringing it alive for kids who weren't there when it was first set, and making sure every single one of them has a great time.
That last part is the real heart of it. We care as much about the child who tends to sit at the edge as the one who always puts their hand up. You'll keep an eye on every kid's experience, who lit up, who hung back, who needs drawing in, and a simple rubric guides you so it never rests on instinct alone.
A word on how we work together, because it matters as much as the work itself. We operate in good faith. We assume the best of each other, we take problems straight to the person who can help rather than around them, and we lift the room rather than weigh it down. It's a small, warm, high-trust team, and that's a deliberate choice.
What you'd own
- Running rehearsals on our three-part method: Warm-up, Scene Work, and Enrichment
- The closing enrichment segment, where kids explore acting and singing beyond their own part, so everyone gets a turn to shine
- Bringing the energy that makes a rehearsal the best part of a kid's week, and builds real friendships
- Keeping an eye on every child's experience - who stood out, who sat out, who needs drawing in
- Running the room from the Rehearsal Management page and logging each child's progress after rehearsal
Not on your plate
- Inventing the show or the method - the blocking, the games, and the enrichment activities are built for you
- Building the cast folder and materials - they're pre-made and waiting on the page
- Production operations, scheduling, and show logistics - the team holds those
You're never carrying it alone
You teach alongside our Rehearsal Lead, who supports the energy in the room and keeps the method consistent across casts. When a question comes up, there's a clear path: creative and content questions go to our Artistic Director, logistics and admin questions go to our Director, so you always know where to take something rather than sitting with it.
The show, the method, and the materials are built for you, the production logistics are held by our production team, and the page handles the structure. Your job is the kids.
Who thrives here
- A seasoned performer with a strong background in the performing arts and real teaching or directing experience.
- A gift with young people. You engage and inspire young performers and foster their growth, treating every child as someone worth seeing.
- Positive, energetic, dynamic. The presence that draws students in is the thing that's hardest to teach and easiest to feel.
- A team player. You collaborate easily and you're glad to deliver a method rather than needing it to be all your own. You see good structure as support, not a constraint.
- Comfortable with a bit of tech. You don't need to be technical, but you're happy to run the room from a page and log a few quick notes after, because it's what lets the admin disappear.
- Professional and reliable, with the highest standards of conduct around children.
What we'll give you
- A role built around teaching, with the vision, logistics, and admin held by the people around you so you can focus on the kids.
- Room to grow, in an organization with innovation at its core and real opportunities for progression.
- A values-led environment built on integrity, immersive creativity, mutual respect, and uncompromising excellence.
- Work that matters - a lasting impact on the lives of young performers, inside a kind and flourishing community.
