Live Sound & Audio Lead

Phoenix, AZ ยท Posted Jun 15, 2026
One person who owns the whole sound of the show, from the lobby music to the final bow, and makes sure every performance is captured for the families who'll treasure it.
Per-show + studioScottsdale, AZHourly, DOEShow dates mandatory

This isn't the usual sound-engineer job sitting quietly behind a board. We're looking for one person to own the entire audio experience of our shows and showcases, end to end, and to own the one duty we can never get wrong: recording every single performance.

Phoenix Institute for Performing Arts runs youth theatre and a voice academy, and sound is woven through all of it. From the moment a family walks into the lobby to the last note of the curtain call, the audio they hear is yours: the mics, the mix, the music, the effects, the whole feel of the room. When it's done well, nobody notices it. They just have a magical night.

And then there's the recording. Every show a child performs in is a memory their family wants to keep forever. Capturing that, reliably, every time, with no failures, is the heart of this role. It's a real responsibility, and we treat it like one.

A word on how we work together, because it matters as much as the work itself. We operate in good faith. We assume the best of each other, we take problems straight to the person who can fix them rather than around them, and we lift the room rather than weigh it down. It's a small, intentional team, and that's a deliberate choice.

Owns the entire audio experience of our shows and showcases end-to-end, and owns the reliable capture of every performance so families receive video they'll be proud of for life.

What you'd own

  • The live mix on our X32, and every mic working so every performer is heard clearly
  • Setting up and directing the A2, and keeping the studio sound running day to day
  • Tech-week readiness, so the cast can use mics from the first night
  • Sound design and playback - lobby music, effects, QLab and backing tracks, programmed and ready by deadline
  • Recording every show and showcase cleanly, every time, with no failures

Not on your plate

  • Inventing the creative vision - the sound-design direction comes to you, and you deliver it beautifully
  • Production scheduling and run sheets - the Production team holds those

The way the room is divided

You're the sound owner, and you're not alone in the booth. Our Production team calls the show - the lights and the sound cues - while you run sound and own the audio itself. The creative sound vision comes from our Creative Director, and you're the one who brings it to life. It's a clean division, so you can focus on doing the audio brilliantly.

Who thrives here

  • A real audio professional. You know your way around a digital console (X32 experience is a plus), live mics, QLab, and recording into a DAW like Reaper or Logic.
  • Someone who owns outcomes, not just tasks. You picture the whole audio experience and take responsibility for it, rather than only the part behind the board.
  • Reliable under pressure, especially in tech and show weeks, with a calm, methodical approach to getting it right every time.
  • A problem-solver who'll reverse-engineer whatever it takes to get a performer heard or a recording captured.
  • Great with a team, happy directing an A2 and coordinating with production and creative staff.

What we'll give you

  • Real ownership of a whole craft, not a narrow slice of it - the kind of role where your work shapes the entire feel of a show.
  • Clear boundaries that protect your focus, with production and creative held by others so you can do sound brilliantly.
  • A values-led environment built on integrity, immersive creativity, mutual respect, and uncompromising excellence.
  • Work that matters - the recordings you make become memories families keep for a lifetime.
